In bag filling applications, achieving the right balance between speed and accuracy is always a challenge. Manufacturers want to fill bags as quickly as possible without compromising on filling accuracy or giving away excess product.
Many engineers assume that the only way to achieve this is by using a control valve with a pneumatic positioner. However, in many coarse and fine filling applications, there is a much simpler and more economical solution.
Recently, one of our customers approached FLUIDTECQ looking for an automated ball valve equipped with a pneumatic positioner.
Their bag filling system required two operating conditions:

The customer believed that a positioner was necessary to obtain an intermediate opening.
After understanding the application in detail, we suggested a different approach.
Understanding the Actual Requirement
A positioner is designed for continuous modulation. It continuously adjusts the valve opening based on a 4-20 mA control signal and is ideal for process control applications where the valve may need to operate anywhere between 0 and 100% opening.
However, this application did not require continuous modulation.
The customer only needed three fixed positions:
Once this was understood, using a positioner became unnecessary.
Our 3-Position Valve Solution

Instead of a pneumatic positioner, FLUIDTECQ supplied a 3-position automated valve using our specially engineered automation package consisting of:
The intermediate opening was mechanically preset during commissioning, ensuring the valve always stopped at the same fine-fill position with excellent repeatability.
The result was exactly what the customer wanted—without the complexity and cost of a positioner.
Why This Solution Makes Sense
Lower Initial Cost
A positioner is one of the most expensive accessories in a pneumatic valve automation package.
For applications requiring only three discrete positions, eliminating the positioner can significantly reduce the overall project cost.

High Repeatability
Since the intermediate opening is mechanically fixed, the valve repeatedly opens to exactly the same position during every filling cycle.
This provides excellent consistency for coarse and fine filling operations.
Faster Response
The valve moves rapidly between the three predefined positions without continuously searching for the desired opening, resulting in shorter cycle times.
Simpler Installation
No analogue control signal, calibration, or tuning is required.
The system uses conventional pneumatic controls that are easy to install and maintain.
Reduced Maintenance
With fewer electronic components and no positioner calibration, maintenance requirements are considerably lower.

Suitable Valve Types
Depending on the process media, FLUIDTECQ offers 3-position automation for:
Ball Valves
Ideal for free-flowing powders, pellets, granules and bulk solids where tight shut-off is required.
Butterfly Valves
Suitable for large diameter pipelines handling powders or low-pressure bulk material.
Knife Gate Valves
Recommended for abrasive materials, difficult powders, fibrous products and applications requiring unrestricted full bore flow.
Typical Applications
Our 3-position valve systems are widely used in:

Choosing the Right Automation
While pneumatic positioners remain the best choice for true modulating control, they are often unnecessary for applications requiring only three fixed operating positions.
By understanding the customer's actual process requirement instead of simply supplying the requested hardware, it is often possible to provide a solution that is simpler, more reliable and significantly more economical.

At FLUIDTECQ, we believe that the best solution is not always the most complex one—it is the one that delivers the required performance in the most efficient and cost-effective manner.
If your application requires coarse and fine filling using Ball Valves, Butterfly Valves or Knife Gate Valves, our engineering team can help you select the most suitable 3-position automation solution for your process.
